Help with the scanner

Messaggio da Alvarez »

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a scanner to try to have my collection better photographed. It is the CanoScan LIDE 400 model.

I am not being able to get good images especially with medals as reflections or blurry areas appear. I would like those who scan your pieces to give me some trick or clue to get better results.

Thank you very much in advance

The Canonscan has no depth of field, it is suitable for scanning only sheets of paper.

Yep, EPSON for sure is still making CCD scanner at an affordable price.

Ok. Thank you for your help.

I have returned the Canon scanner, the question now, is it worth buying a scanner or the pictures with camera are enough?

I would like to have my collection properly documented.

Thanks again

What can be observed with the scanner is not comparable with photos.

I think you made the right choice. I am also considering that model when I will replace my EPSON Perfection 1260, which is still honorably doing its job after 21 years!

Hi,

That's what I got for the moment. What do you think? Is it good enough? Should I get better pictures? Any tip in order to get better scans?

The real pictures are higher that those but I am not sure If I could get such detailed pictures as filo posted.

Thanks in advance.

You for sure will get better pictures with just little practice. EPSON scan software has some settings to tweak for the different type of scans you can do with their device.
Here is an interesting tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBFfqtvfK1E
For hints about scanning 3d objects with a flatbed scanner, search "scanography" on youtube or elsewhere on the web. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aH9CFyNhIWA

My 2cents tip: the scanner will better balance the colors in auto mode if you use a white background. In all cases, avoid to include too much background (especially if it is black or white) and crop as much as possible on the object. The object should occupy the most part of the scanned area. Too much black or too much white might cause the scan to be incorrectly exposed. Keep also in mind that a bit of photoshopping is often needed in order to make the scan more crispy and the colors more saturated or realistics, but most of the time you will only need to adjust the brightness and the contrast to compensate the exposure.

Thank you or your help Rocket!!

I have some problems with the scanner lid because of the shadows (see the first picture).

Tha's why I did the previous scans without the lid (black background).

Now I am using a little box in order to avoid black background and the shadows and tha's the result (see the second picture).

Anyway I think that one of the problems is the way to reduce the size of the picture due to the forum restrictions. See the real picture:

Taking into account that I am not editing pictures after the scan I am quite happy with the result for the medals. At least with the scans in original size, the results are similar to those I can see in some webpages (mondvor.narod, medalsmarket...).

I have seen that the light is very important and just turning the piece, the results could change dramatically. See the example with the ORS.

On the other hand I am getting really poor results for the ORS reverse due to the big distance. I am not sure if those poor results are because of the limit of the scanner or I am doing thing not correctly. Filo, how did you get such a detailed scan?

Thanks in advance

You should be very happy with your scanner, results are very good and will be better and better with the experience. You can use EPSON software to make your scan and learn how to balance the colors, add crispness and details depending on the object you shoot at, but... you will never manage to increase the depth of field more than it actually is, unfortunately. CCD scanners have enough depth of field to keep in focus objects few millimeters thick (check this article) but at about 8-10mm above the glass the image is already significantly blurry, as you can see for your ORS. I guess that for those mintmarks enlargements filo is using one of those usb microscopes (USB microscope) or an equivalent, more optically performant, device.
