Ormai diversi giorni fa, scrissi questo messaggio --- By now a few days ago I wrote this message (arguing that amongst the pieces presented in the cumulative picture one in particular was a museum piece of the highest significance).
E oggi scoprite finalmente qual'è --- Today you finally get to discover which one it is.GC* ha scritto: un pezzo tra questi (quello che non sospettereste mai) che è veramente da museo e che ho cercato invano per anni (e che ho pensato non avrei mai trovato).
Eccolo: --- Here it comes: Ora, voi potreste dirmi "ma tra tutti quegli smalti, quelle belle costruzioni metalliche, quesi simboli complessi degli altri fregi, proprio questo doveva essere "da museo"? Ma doveste fermarvi all'apparenza, fareste torto al significato storico di questo piccolo fregio in tessuto --- Now, you could well say "come on, amongst all those enamels, those beautiful metal constructions and those complex simbologies present on the other cap badges, this one really needed to be the "museum piece"?. Yet, if you'd stop right there, at this badges'a appearance, you'd wrong its historical significane.
I comunisti dell'ELAS-EAM erano nettamente in maggioranza.

This is a Greek cap badge. Yes, greek and communist. And here our story begins. We are in Greece, WWII, a nation that went from the fascist dictatorship of Metaxas to Nazi-Fascist occupation (after the Third Reich cam to rescue the disorganised Italian army that was being kicked in the butt by the Greeks..).
As all across Europe, armed resistance flourishes. And as all across Europe, also in Greece different political tendencies are represented in the movement. There is the communist ELAS-EAM and the anti-communist, nationalist-republican organisations EDES, EOK, EKKA. The communists represented the largest portion of the partisans. And once again as elsewhere in Europe, the relations between these organisations were at time tense. In Greece however, this tension gave way to a full-blown internal civil war amongst partisans in 1943-1944. ELAS-Em accused EDEs of collaborating with the Nazis, something that was attempted and even planned, but never actually happened, while EDES accused ELAs-EAM of fighting to establish communist and not to free Greece, which was of course partially true. True, even if denied for decades, are also the accusations against ELAS-EAM of unleashing a campaign of repression that in some cases took the form of an organised terror.
A fragile truce is established in 1944, but by that time the communist resistance is so strong that it establishes the so called "Mountains Government", which since then functions as second centre of power, alongside the exiled Greek Government, electing even a Parliament.
Needless to say, this situation could not last long into the post-war period.

And as a matter of fact things degenerate quickly. Greek communists, poor them, had no idea Stalin had already given them up in October 1944. Stalin and Churchill had back then decided, like to 18th century monarchs, to split-up occupied south-east Europe according to percentages. In Greece the British Empire was to enjoy 90% of influence..
Shame that, as opposed to Romania, Poland and Hungary, where there were few communists and even fewer appetite for communism in Greece the support for ELAS-EAM and for the communist party was strong.
In May 1944 a Unity Government had been established, but the retreat of the Nazis had left ELAS-EAM in control of much of Greece, which however had remained loyal to the Unity Government under strict orders from Moscow. At that time however a new player come in: Tito. Stalin loyalist back then, he had however no idea Stalin had already given up on Greece and supported the Greek communists, also in their decision not to disarm, which greatly increased tensions. The situation entirely degenerated. In Athens the British army ordered ELAS-EAM to disarm and upon their refusal all-out war breaks out there between late 1944 and 1945 ELAS-EAM are defeated and ELAS disarmed..the White Terror is unleashed. Right when liberation from the nazis was achieves, former collaborationists and fascists from the Metaxas era imprison and kill communists in the thousands.

The Civil War break out in 1946, after ELAS-EAM veterans establish the DSE, Democratic Army of Greece. Supported by the Communist Party-KKE, by Albania, Bulgarian and Yugoslavia they establish a Government and go onto the offensive. We all know the story: after initial successes, American support for the 1946 ultra-nasionalist Greek Government increases exponentially, while the USSR refuses to support the DSE, remaining loyal (in this case..) to the wartime agreements with the USA and UK. Then Yugoslavia breaks off from the Stalin. It's the end for the DSE. After military defeat, repression is unleashed.
Il fregio che avete disto sopra è dell'Esercito Democratico Greco e reca la "delta" di Dimokratikos --- The cap badge you observed above belongs to the Democratic Army of Greece and displays the "delta" of Dimokratikos.
And here it is, worn by two DSE fighters. Now the hunting season is open for the DSE metal badge, which I show you in photo and in a great shot from the war period (take note of the fact that the girl wears an American uniform and is armed with a British rifle).
Altre versioni del fregio ovviamente esistevano. Eccone una a colori invertiti --- Other versione of the cap badge of course existed and here comes one with alternate colours.
Spero di non avervi annoiato a morte - I hope I haven't bored all of you to death.
