Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica
Piccola nota.
Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica

bel sito Filo! molto interessante
Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica

Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica
Interessantissima disamina......grazie !
Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica

Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica
Attenzione.

Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica

Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica
Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica
Bulinatura...o punzonatura..... ?????
Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica
Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica
Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica
Guys,
It seems that I have opened Pandora's box with my comments
So, from what I have read (well, tried to, at least), I believe that we first need to go through some basics.
Both McDaniel and Mondvor define 2 types of Hero star, the difference being the suspension. This basic distinction is useful, but the reality is a little more complex than that.
Effectively, two different dies have been used for the manufacturing of the gold stars themselves, onto which the suspension issue must be grafted:
. Suspension: here, all is fairly straightforward. There are two types of suspension, the early one (small, with soldered connecting ring at the bottom of the frame, although it is possible that the diameter of the screwpost differs between earlier and later suspensions of this type), and the later one (larger, squarer, with separate connecting ring). One nuance though, the first type was issued both with Мондвор (earlier) and Монетный Двор (later) screwplates, therefore we have two varieties in the first type. The switch from early to late type suspension seems to have taken place somewhere in the 1200 range. As to screwplates, up to roughly 800, they were Мондвор; from about 1100, they were Монетный Двор. At this stage, it is impossible to be more precise about the interval in-between as we need to find untouched originals to confirm which screwplate was originally issued.
. Star: early and later stars used different dies and punches, so effectively, we have two types of stars. The early die shows a wider space between the first and the second C in СССР; the late die shows a wider space between the second and third С in СССР. This implies minute position differences of СССР with respect to the word ГЕРОЙ between the types (photo 1: HSU 473, 893, 1392, 4340, 2653 Top to Bottom). Also, the punches used for stamping the SN were slightly different: on early stars, they were somewhat thinner; on later stars, they were a bit thicker (photo 2).
So, all in all, we end up with the following classification:
T1V1 Early star on early suspension, Мондвор screwplate
T1V2 Early star on early suspension, Монетный Двор screwplate
T2 Transitional: early star on later suspension
T3 Late star on late suspension

Signori,

Here is an extremely rare second award of the Hero star to Admiral Gorshkov. The second Hero star is imprinted with Roman numeral II on the top arm of the star, the serial number being stamped underneath.
Third and fourth awards are marked III and IV respectively on the top arm of the star. Numbering for all subsequent awards (II, III and IV) started from 1.

Re: Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica
Now, to answer some of the comments that were made since my original post (some of which being addressed to me personally ), I do not claim to be anything more than a phaleristics enthusiast specializing in Soviet awards. I have been collecting and studying them for 20 years, and I am always willing to share my knowledge with whomever might be interested (and I do believe that it is not very complicated to tell who some of these people might be ). And please, refrain from using the term "guru", I find it offensive.
There isn't any dark secret at work here. Unlike awards from many other countries, Soviet awards were almost exclusively produced by the State Mint, a very specific and controlled environment. So, making parallels with US or German 3rd Reich is completely wrong and is a totally useless approach. Effectively, Soviet phaleristics is much more similar to numismatics: almost all items were produced using a limited number of dies whose characteristics can be identified and used as markers (Russian speakers use the term "watermark"). The presence of a single one of them is not enough to confirm authenticity, as fakers have identified some of them; only the full set of these markers combined with other signs (engraving style, mintmark, patina, etc) can lead to positive identification.
The level of fakes produced today is such that, for some pieces (Partisan, Defense of Odessa or Sevastopol medals in particular) it is impossible to tell if a piece is genuine or not when in less that top state of preservation. For many pieces (order of Glory 1st class, multiple awards of the order of the Red Banner, for example), the distinction can only be made at the microscopic level as they are produced using precious metal of proper alloy.
Now, for the big secret How do I know all of this? How did I learn about that all? The short and long answer is: homework! The keyword is observation. All there is to it is to study carefully known genuine pieces. By the way, there is not necessary a need to own said pieces to do that. Igor Pak and Andrey Kuznetsov developed their acute knowledge mostly by studying good quality scans/pictures of original pieces. The last time I spoke to Igor Pak, he had never owned a single Hero star, yet he can identify genuine ones with a very high level of reliability.
So, all it takes is dedication and hard work (sorry for those of you who were expecting the "Identifying fake Soviet awards for Dummies" guide ).

Actually, I believe that the duplicate you show is a fake. I know of only 3 genuine ones, 2 with stamped number (one with "Д" [see below], one without), and one with a hand engraved number and letter "D".

Am i wrong or the two serial number style is completely different? It seems to me that the HSU first award has the same style used in duplicates.
Re: HSU Stella d'Eroe dell'Unione Sovietica
Airon,
You are right, the punches used on the first award star are unusual for a Hero star. This is actually the only one that I know of having this style of digits. That being said, these punches are the same ones that are used, as you mentioned, for duplicates.
My guess is that Gorshkov, given his top rank equivalent to that of Marshal, had a few sets of Hero stars, so that he would not need every morning to unpin tham from one suit and pin them to another one. It is known that some Marshals did have several sets, the recordman for that being, of course, Leonid Ilich
