//
As promised some times ago, I am posting my small reportage from Eberswalde, a nice little town in the east of Germany, which, as in most part of the former DDR, still displays signs of its socialist past.
//
In 1945 the 4th Guards Tank Army was deployed in Eberswalde, while as of 1991 it was the 20th Guards Combined Arms Army that had its base there. Close to Eberswalde is Finow, at which airport a fighters regiment was deployed.
//
Tbh, I was a bit disappointed by the results of the expedition, since I hoped to explore the remains of the Soviet army base..which however lies in shambles..
//
At the same time I did find something to see. I knew a graveyard existed, the “Sowjetische Garnisonsfriedhof Eberswalde”, built in 1946 and enlarged in 1956 and 1963. As of the 1960s nearly 900 people were buried there (was casualties and Soviet citizens perished in the aftermath of the was due to injuries, illness or accidents). After the fall of the Warsaw Pact and the disappearance of the DDR, the remains of some Soviet citizens were brought back to the motherland and the graveyard was abandoned.
//
However, in 2009 in was entirely renovated and now it does look well kept. Unfortunately the photos on the graves are almost all missing, not sure whether due to vandalism or if the retreating Soviets took them away.
Ecco quindi il cimitero.
//
Here comes the graveyard
//
On the way to the remains of the Soviet base I found something I wasn’t expecting: a moment celebrating the fallen soldiers in the Great Patriotic War. A nice monument..which bronze star was however unfortunately shot at..
//
Not far from the Soviet monument, in the civilian cemetery, in a small meadow hatch, not very well kept..the other side..
//
And here what’s left of the Soviet base (nothing)
//
Finally, here for you the abandoned Officers’ Club, in front of which stood a Lenin monument, preserved during the 1990s and then moved to the Finow airport (itself a former Soviet base), in the Aviation Museum.
