All my interest for the story of this tank, started when I saw it in one of the photos of the amazing lot posted here by Pakkenen.

I had already planned to go to Eberswalde (and here you can find my reportage), but, interestingly, I had not found any info about a T-34 there. And indeed as of today there is none.

E in effetti tutti i T-34-85 avevano un aspetto "simile" no?

//
But let’s start from the beginning of this heroic and sad story...
Maria Iosifofa Orlova had her husband, her three sons and her daughter join the war effort against the Wehrmacht. One of her son, Vasily Feodorivich Orlov was the commander of the 6th Mechanised Guards Corp, a decorated war hero. She wrote to Stalin to express the desire to finance the construction of a T-34-85 to be sent to her son. Vasily received it from the commander of the 4th Guards Tank Army, Lelyushenko, just few days before he tragically fell in combat on March 18, 1945. The tank seem to have been named “Rodina-Mat” in those days.

The tank was therefore reassigned to a new crew: tank commander Lieutenant P. Kashnikov, driver Sergeant A. Ostapenko, gunner Sergeant I. Anferov, charger Sergeant B. Korobeynikov, radio operator Sergeant Levchenko. They wrote Maria Iosifova a letter where they performed an oath that with the tank she had built out of her savings, they would have crushed Nazis even more than they had previously done.

The crew kept its word and went on destroying 17 tanks and self-propelled guns, 2 armoured personnel carriers and18 vehicles.

Or this is what official history says..there seems to be much confusion as which tank did what and even about whether the crew of Kashnikov effectively received the tank built with Maria Iosifova’s money.. After all T-34-85 did look quite alike! Anyways, the official and maybe romanticised version of history was further romanticised when in 1965, on the pedestal of the tank transformed in monument, the names of the crew were added, stating that they had fought in Berlin and Prague in 1944 and 1945.

If reliable sources are simply missing in regards to which tank was actually assigned to Kashnikov, one thing can sadly not be falsified. Kashnikov and his whole crew died on April 28, 1945 near Potsdam and therefore could not fight in Berlin, nor in Prague.. Again here you can find an extremely detailed research about the actual fate of the tank crew.

Nevertheless, the Soviet soldiers and Officers at Eberswalde knew nothing of this historical truth and as you can imagine, the official story made of the tank basically a site of pilgrimage (and of very many collective photos).

However, once the Wall came down and with it the whole of socialism, the tank was moved.

Interestingly, very many other T-34s are still around Germany. In Berlin only at the Tiergarten and at Karlshorst and others scattered around the ex DDR (and extremely well kept):

Eccolo!

The “Rodina-Mat” tank though, was not amongst the tanks left in Germany. The “Motherland” tank was taken back to the motherland (and I know you’ll excuse me for this corny joke). Since then it has changed location a couple of times, but it always remained a monument, currently on display in Saratov. Here it is!

E giusto per finire con qualche bella bandiera, ecco la bandiera da battaglia della 81th Guards Motorized Rifle Petrokovsky twice Red Banner Order of Suvorov, Kutuzov and Bogdan Khmelnitsky Regiment (81-й гвардейский мотострелковый Петроковский дважды Краснознамённый орденов Суворова, Кутузова и Богдана Хмельницкого полк), sul cui territorio stava orgoglioso il tank "Rodina-Mat".
//
And just to finish this with some nice flags, admire here the battle flag of the 81° Reggimento Motorizzato Fucilieri Guardie "Petrovsky" due volte Ordine della Bandiera Rossa, Ordine di Suvorov, Kutuzov e Bogdan Khmelnitsky (81-й гвардейский мотострелковый Петроковский дважды Краснознамённый орденов Суворова, Кутузова и Богдана Хмельницкого полк), on which territory in Eberswalde the “Rodina-Mat” tank stood proudly.

Ora, l'81° ha cessato di esistere. E' stato unificato con il "433° Reggimento Motorizzato Fucilieri Cosacchi del Don Ordine della Bandiera Rossa" nel 2009 e rinominato 23° Brigata Separata Motorizzata Fucilieri Guardie "Petrovsky" Cosacchi del Volga due volte Ordine della Bandiera Rossa, Ordine di Suvorov, Kutuzov e Bogdan Khmelnitsky (23-я гвардейская отдельная мотострелковая Петроковская дважды Краснознамённая орденов Суворова, Кутузова и Богдана Хмельницкого Волжская Казачья бригада), che ha però ricevuto con tutti gli onore la bandiera da battaglia dell'81°, ora conservata al suo comando.

Now, the 81st has ceased existing. It’s been unified with the 433rd Motorised Rifle Red Banner Don Cossacks Regiment in 2009 and renamed 23rd Guards Separate Motorised Rifle Petrokovsky twice Red Banner Order of Suvorov, Kutuzov and Bogdan Khmelnitsky Volga Cossacks Brigade (23-я гвардейская отдельная мотострелковая Петроковская дважды Краснознамённая орденов Суворова, Кутузова и Богдана Хмельницкого Волжская Казачья бригада), which however has received with full honours the battle flag of the 81st, now kept in its command.

As per new regulations on battle flags in place since 2006, this is instead the new battle flag of the 23rd Brigade.
