I for a long time thought that the style of the sickle (specifically of the handle) gave an idea about pre or post-war manufacture. Then I started doubting it (and expressed my doubts HERE). I now think there are two key elements for identifying pre and post-war patterns: prongs and material. All pilotka stars that have "closed up" prongs on the reverse and enamel on the front (I think) should be considered pre-war (specifically 1936).
