Re: Fregi a stella "non-textbook" della РККА e CA, IIGM-1950
Richie, you have a stunning collection, the m40 general aviation with the two pieces cockade is a museum specimen! I hope you can share with us other photos of this hat in the uniforms section.
Re: Fregi a stella "non-textbook" della РККА e CA, IIGM-1950
Here some new recent acquisitions! IMO all German reparations.
Ecco qui qualche alcune nuove acquisizioni! Secondo me tutte prodotte in Germania come riparazioni post-belliche.

Let's start with this very interesting star. This is very very small, 20mm. Screwback. Now, was this model a cap device or anything else?
Cominciamo con questa stella molto interessante. E' molto piccola, 20mm.
Let's now move on another very interesting star. This seems to be the smaller version of this one I previously posted, although there are several sifferences (http://www.rkka.it/forum/download/file.php?id=139663). Definitely German made.
Here now a little beauty. Intact red paint and quite particular hammer and sickle. Again, surely German made.
Ecco qui ora una piccola bellezza. Vernice rossa intatta e una falce e martello abbastanza particolare. Nuovamente, sicuramente tedesca.
Let's pass now to what I believe is just the almost perfect small-size replica of this star of mine previously posted (http://www.rkka.it/forum/download/file.php?id=139742). Beautiful ename work. IMO German.
Smalti perfetti. Secondo me di produzione tedesca.
Let's now get to a star almost identical to of a previously posted star (http://www.rkka.it/forum/download/file.php?id=139655). The only difference lies in the prongs on the reverse. They look original to me. Once more, German.

Finally, this should just be a more preserved version of a star I already owned (http://www.rkka.it/forum/download/file.php?id=139748). What do you say? Exactly the same star? Funny shocking red colour.

This is not my lucky week..
Concerning the first star I posted.. I noticed that the tip of the two bottom arrows is missing. I got suspicious and started thinking about what this little star could be. Then I found these images

Here comes a new Soviet pilotka star. The question is, was it manufactured with enamel, which was then lost, or was it actually manufactured without, so the be for the low visibility uniform? I'd say this one is either IIGM or immediately afterwards. 24mm.

In my opinion, wartime made - prong configuration is the attribute. The enamel has been lost due to fire and/or appears to have spent time in acidic soil - like the type of soil in an evergreen forest.
Again, just my opinion...

Fully agree. Prongs and style of the sickle's handle suggested me we are looking at a wartime piece. Due to the star's look I also am inclined to believe the enamel was once there. What strikes me is how intact the prongs are - while we see no trace whatsoever of the enamel!RichieC ha scritto:In my opinion, wartime made - prong configuration is the attribute. Re: Fregi a stella "non-textbook" della РККА e CA, IIGM-1950
Here come another example of "non-textbook" star. I tend to believe this is a German-made post-war star. Damaged enamel has been badly replaced and a rather interesting fixing device has replaced the missing prongs.

Re: Fregi a stella "non-textbook" della РККА e CA, IIGM-1950

Indeed, I already had in my collection (http://www.rkka.it/forum/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=28592) a version of this star showing enamel instead of red paint. Here we have then a nice little family of two almost twin sister start, both showing flat reverse and a rather particular hammer and sickle.

Verissimo!

Re: Fregi a stella "non-textbook" della РККА e CA, IIGM-1950
Here is an example that exhibits, beyond the shadow of a doubt, some characteristics of the Model 1936. Measurement is precisely 39.12MM
However, the vaulting seems be extreme compared to it's "textbook" counterparts. Also, the mounting prongs seem to be simply affixed using the hammer and sickle embellishment's wire prongs. Perhaps there is a clue hidden underneath this tangle, but I will not venture there...
In any case, I feel that this is just an early variant of the larger Model 1936 star, but it is certainly not an example you see more often than not - so it is shown here in this thread.

Fully agree. Similarities are clear beyond doubt. And yet this dies deserve a place in the "non-textbook" topic due to some really interesting unusual features. This one is indeed a rather hard one to comment on. Is this actually Soviet? When I see this type of stars I always give a thought to the possibility these were distributed to "new allies" such as Bulgarians and Romanians after they turned against the Third Reich. We both have in our collections a Bulgarian large green-painted star that we agreed long ago is probably a WWII or immediately post-war piece. What do you think?RichieC ha scritto:I truly do not have much to state about this crudely made specimen. Approximately 37MM and non-magnetic.

Again, truly, I don't know for certain. This came from St Petersburg some years ago. I showed to to Denis Rodichev and his thoughts were that it was something produced in a makeshift workshop in Leningrad during the siege. Or, it could be a costume or movie prop item. The latter really does not make sense, as there are so many stars abound - why make one just for costume? This will remain a mystery for some time I'm afraid.

Re: Fregi a stella "non-textbook" della РККА e CA, IIGM-1950
Here I post an old acquaintance of us, this rather unusual M55 officers' cap badge - belonging to that 1955 generation of oval cap badges which largely replaced enamelled stars. This has been already posted by me in a different topic, where the poor fellow is rather misplaced, http://www.rkka.it/forum/download/file.php?id=138031 . Here it is, in the middle of a standard Officers' cap badge (right) and a standard Generals/Marshals' cap badge (left). However, the rather unusual M55 officers' cap badge should have been posted here, in the "non-textbook" thread.
And indeed, our good Richie said, referring to his own specimen:
New cap badge. Old cap badge. Comparison between new (left) and old (right).
Now, there ought no doubt that such cap badge does not follow any Soviet standard for oval M55 cockades. It logically follows that this is a reparations production, almost certainly from Germany. My only issue here is, are we talking of a Officers or Generals/Marshals' cockade? If at least the basics of Soviet standards were respected, these cockades of mine (with white and not golden background for the red star) should have belonged to the Officers corp.. I feel we'll never know the answer until we find some photo evidence of this cockades in use
And indeed, our good Richie said, referring to his own specimen:
I recently acquired a second of such cap badges. Here I post both the new cap badge, the old one and a comparative photo of my two specimens.RichieC ha scritto:What I believe to be a German made example of the M55 Generals cockarde. Note the high quality workmanship...

I think we can therefore safely assume this is German-made reparations production for Soviet officers.
Re: Fregi a stella "non-textbook" della РККА e CA, IIGM-1950
Here comes today my latest addition to the "non-textbook" section of my collection! Probably we are dealing here with yet another German-made post-war reparations star. This one is rather similar in design and measures to a star previously posted. This is a recurring theme through this thread. We have indeed identified several other cases where different variations of the same type of star were produced.
Very interesting (at least for me - and Richie! )
