The hammer and sickle crucifix was donated to the Pope by President Morales as a copy of the original one that was constructed by Jesuit priest Luís Espinal Camps, priest, journalist, filmmaker, Professor, human rights activist and Marxist.
He was a missionary in Bolivia and was killed in 1980, after a fascist "death squad" kidnapped him and brutally tortured him.

The Pope visited the site where he was killed and had words of great appreciation for him.
