the whole back looks weird / the surface with the many "lakes" looks suspicious.

I am helping a collector to sort out the fakes in his collection.

Piece was bought in 1997. Interesting that such copys exit in this early period.

Actually not. There were many high quality copies of HSU stars even during the USSR. I remember that Paul McDaniel stated once that when he was conducting research before writing the "Bible", he had encountered several dozens of high quality fakes.

So, nothing new under the sun, the fakes are just getting better.
