How NOT to Buy Fakes
Re: How NOT to Buy Fakes
Back to this thread...
Fakes made from genuine awards (like suspension awards converted to screwback and visa versa; awards with changed serial numbers; awards "upgraded" from lower class to a higher one, etc.) in most cases present no problem, with the exception of Order of Labor Glory 1st class, Order of the Service to Motherland 2nd and 3rd classand some others. I will post some examples.

A fake Labor Glory 1st class. You can tell by hot enamel on the small segment to the left of the tower.

Hello Alexei, your old picture of this Budapest medal worried me for hours and hours. I'm not really at ease with this too simply engraved liberation medals. What are the give-aways about this fake Budapest please?Nota_Bene ha scritto:If you know what to look for (in this care the suspension ring) you can spot a fake even from a low res picture.
Re: How NOT to Buy Fakes
That's the problem with those fake medals - when the scans are not detailed enough, it's almost impossible to tell. In this case check the letter "У" in "БУДАПЕШТА" and you will see the difference.komsomol ha scritto: Hello Alexei, your old picture of this Budapest medal worried me for hours and hours. Thanks guys! If there is interest I will be happy to continue this thread and post interesting fakes once in a while.
If a kind moderator would consider "sticking" this thread maybe other members here would also post fakes here

And for your amusement - these two were sent to me for authentication only a couple of days apart. Both are fakes and both "purchased from a very reputable dealer", who remained unnamed.

Re: How NOT to Buy Fakes
Hi Alexei!
Maybe my memory fails...but i remember, for the series "total fantasy", a paticular kind of screwback orders (maybe OPW, OAN or similars) that had, in place of the screw, a german type suspension system (like Iron Cross I class). The tale was that those were specimens made by the germans for their spies among the Red Army
Never seen/sound something like that?

This piece has been discussed to death and lots of theories were formulated, but I don't believe this is the one Andrej is refering to. Let me check my scans...filo ha scritto:Forse intendi questo?
