On March 24, 1945, during the offensive near the village of Vartaja in the Latvian SSR, he was present among the ranks of the infantry, where he skillfully provided the latter with covering machine-gun fire at the moment of their attack. During the fighting on March 24, 1945 comrade Sumko killed as many as 12 German soldiers.
He deserves the Order of Glory, 3rd Class.
